So as you know I've had weight loss surgery in january this year. Part of the post op diet is to get in 60-70g of protein everyday. For a normal adult this can amount to a couple of large couple of chicken breasts or fish. There is protein in most animal based foods but I'm unable to get this amount of food in due to the size and capacity of my stomach. They advise this much protein as I am lacking in so many areas of my diet and a low protein diet can cause things such as vitamin deficiency leading to things such as hair loss.

Now since surgery I have tried quite a few different brands of protein, from powders to bars and pre made shakes. My favourite by far is the Protein World The Slender Blend protein powder. It retails for £19.99 and can be bought at most big superstores and health stores such as; Superdrugs, Boots, Asda, Tesco and Holland and Barrett. Superdrug tends to be where I get mine as it's usually on offer.

My preferred way to prepare this shake is by using 4 scoops as advised, I mix this with 300ml of semi-skimmed milk and throw in some frozen strawberries. It is however good without the frozen strawberries. I've found this to be the only protein powder that doesn't clump together and doesn't leave a horrible coating on your teeth. The flavour is very yummy and pretty true to description. They have several flavours such as Vanilla, chocolate, strawberry and peaches and cream. My go to is however the vanilla. They also offer a vegan range for those who prefer this. A 40g serving (4 scoops) will give you 141cal, 24g of protein, 1.5g of fat and 8.2g of carbs. Adding in 300ml of semi-skimmed milk and half a cup of frozen strawberries make my shake roughly 270cal. I would have one of these either for breakfast or over the course of the morning. If you do not have a shaker bottle I would definitely recommend you getting one as they are designed to mix up the powder without leaving clumps. I also have a Breville smoothie maker which I use if I'm blending in frozen fruit.

If I'm working I tend to go for a pre made shake which are quick and easy and taste good. I will however use this as a breakfast replacement. My preferred shakes are the Somebody shakes by Superdrug or the Ufit shakes which I buy from the Co-op. These retail for as little as £1, Superdrug tend to put them on offer for as little as £0.50p!! The shakes usually contain 24-26g of protein in around 170-180cal. The flavour range for pre made shakes tends to be pretty limited, you can usually only find strawberry or chocolate sometimes latte. I have also just discovered the new Nestle protein drinks in Asda which have more of a yoghurt consistency but they are very enjoyable! Most pre made shakes are best served chilled so make sure you put them in the fridge or have some ice cubes to hand.

I have also tried a few other brands but have found many of these are very hard to stomach, don't blend well or have a horrible artificial taste to them. A few of the brands I have tried are the Grenade Carb Kills shakes, Sci MX nutrition, USN and Slimfast.
